Planning for your future

It’s all about you!

What do you dream of doing when you’re older? Do you want to be a nurse, an engineer, a writer, a dancer? Perhaps you dream of being a professional footballer, or running your own business some day? Type some notes about your dreams into the box below.

The best way to work towards reaching your dream is to set a series of goals that you will need to achieve…these are the key steps that will take you to your overall dream. Identifying these steps can really help you to see the key choices you will need to make in order to achieve your goals.

For example, let’s imagine that your dream is to work as an engineer – what do you need to do to achieve this? You can identify the goals you need to achieve by working backwards on a timeline, like this:

  1. In six years’ time, I want to be working as an engineer.
  2. In five years’ time, I will need to have completed an engineering degree at university.
  3. In two years’ time, I will need to have passed my A-Level exams – I will need A-Levels in maths, physics and one other subject to get onto my chosen degree course.
  4. This year, I will need to pass my GCSE exams – I will need nine good grades to be able to move on and study for my A-Levels. I will need to do particularly well in maths, physics and English.

It’s all about you!

Now have a go at doing this goal setting exercise yourself. Begin by thinking about the job you would most like to do in the future. Then, work backwards and identify the key milestones and achievements you will need in order to reach your ultimate goal!
