If you are running a business or enterprise, you will need to register for VAT once your VAT taxable turnover is greater then £82,000. This figure is known as the VAT registration threshold. As with VAT rates, this threshold figure can change regularly (usually once a year) - so you should check your turnover regularly against the current threshold figure, so you can make sure you are registering for VAT at the right time.
As well as registering for VAT when you reach the threshold, you must also register for VAT if you think you will reach or exceed the threshold in the next 30 days.
